The highlight was Terry's 13 inch Jumbo caught first thing in the morning ! It was great to get out !
Here is an update, I was out yesterday and the ice was 16-18 inches thick. Fishing was slow though.
I am finding the ice out in front of the golf course about 13" and the fishing really slow.
Have you been out anywhere else yet this winter?
No I live at Blackstrap so I have a shack set up that I can hide from the elements and enjoy time with friends and family.
I have always found the strap to be hit or miss in the winter but on the day you find them it can be a lot of fun. I was at Evans on Saturday and there must have been 20 trucks out on the ice already in that small area. I would like to learn to target the giant whites in the lake . I know some guys can find em but I have not managed that yet.
What would one use to target the whites on the strap. See them on cam but seem pretty finicky.
I know at other lakes like Dief lots of anglers use hooks like Wireworms or smaller jigs to get them but i just dont know where you would find decent numbers at the Strap. I have seen a few on the cam and marked suspended fish on the Vex that i thought were whites but had no luck.Maybe another member has some tips about this.
I have also only caught the odd one at the strap. At dief, it seems like they're everywhere in the winter. Whenever I've wanted to catch them i've had the best luck with tiny tube jigs or tiny tungsten jig heads tipped with a bit of minnow.
My dad always caught white fish on Delmotte corn (not Green Giant) on a jig head at Diefenbaker.
Not sure about BS though.
Blackstrap really has changed over the last 20 years as well. I remember catching 30 Burbs a day there 25 years ago. I have not seen one in a while.
Hopefully hitting the ice for the first time tomorrow, if the snow isnt to bad
Good luck @darrenf4422
Do you mean the snow on the lake or in the forecast?
We could use a bit of snow out here, as long as it doesn't blow to bad.
Anyone driving on the northend yet?
In the forecast. I dont get to go fishing whenever i feel like any more so its the day i plan or i miss out.
I caught a burbot last summer bottom bouncing in the old river channel.
I will give the same advise I gave on another site.
People are driving on at the north end, I watched the ice freeze from my living room window and you won't see my truck out there!
Geese were in open water in December.
@darrenf4422 You make it out today?
Thanks for the advice. I like to walk on almost always anyway. Take care
