Hi, I finally got a chance to try ice fishing the north sask river, had a great day catching walleye but couldn't track down any sturgeon. Just wondering if anyone else has tried this?
Ya, ive ice fished the north sask a few years ago, caught decent walleye. But the silt in the ice was too hard on auger blades so kinda gave up on it.. I wanted to try to get a sturgeon through the ice too.
Hi, very true about the blades! Only got 4 holes drilled and the blades are completely toast. Now I'm deciding if it's worth giving it another try or just wait till spring
If you can sharpen your own blades it might be worth it.. My friend used a dremmel tool to sharpen his when we tried the river, probly find better methods if u search google.
Never tried fishing the river system during winter. what areas have somewhat safe ice? most places I fish around borden and petrofka are near eddies and fast moving water durring the summer.
Hi Shawn, we fished at the Cecil ferry. It's a very popular fishing spot in the summer. There is a winter road across the ice and it's well over 20 inches! I do have a few more spots that are better but I haven't checked the ice thickness there yet. Tuff to say if I'll even try again because the silt and sand in the ice destroyed my blades. But we did manage to get a few really nice walleye in the few hours we tried!
Good to know I've ruined a few sets of blades in the past fishing on lakes near highways. After a good wind a lot of grit gets in the ice and chews up your blades. I have a spare set that are some what sharp, i put them on when i'm fishing those spots.
