I was just out fishing on Last Mountain yesterday and we drove on at the Midway Road. We had to drive through a little bit of water near shore to get on.
My reason for this caution is because of how the ice froze up there early in the season. When the ice was first forming at about 3-4 inches it broke up about 100 yards from shore and it spans all the way south to Rowans I am told, never went that far south. Because of this the ice refroze and new ice formed between these broken up segments. This creates low spots and places for the water to pool up and seep into cracks that wouldn't normally be there. On our way off the ice yesterday it was melting pretty bad and water was pooling in the low spots. The ice was still 3 feet thick but its starting to get bad and soft. Not being able to see whats under the water on the ice is very dangerous and unnerving. Normally this would not bother me as much but they way the ice refroze and is not uniform in its bond is a recipe for disaster.
I hope everyone stays safe and remembers whats most important... Catching fish...safely!
Good Luck and Happy Safe Fishing!
