Hi guys, I am looking for a product that will ward off biting insects with out having to apply bug repellent directly to my skin, not a big fan of smearing deet all over me. Have any of you tried the OFF clip-on Mosquito Repellent, or the thermacell biting insect repellent Any other alternate bug repellent suggestions are also welcome. WW
I recently ordered a "Buff" (Bandanna/facemask type thing) that has both UV protection and a form of insect repellant built into the material (claims to be good for up to 70 wash cycles). I can honestly say after a few outings that it works pretty damn good. i have repeatedly seen mosquitoes and other flies etc come within a few inches of my face, hover and fly away. Even in larger swarms the ones that do touch it are not that much of a nuisance due to the cloth protective layer. It also works good as a wind block on your face on late night cold boat rides home and is even pretty breathable (i usually don't cover my nose when wearing shades though due to fog). I couldn't find anyone in saskatoon selling the insect ones locally so i had to order it off amazon.com. It was a bit pricey but i do like wearing bandannas anyway and i was looking for a sunblock alternative for my face for long days out on the water, when i found out the insect repellent option existed that was a great added bonus. I wasn't sure it would work but in my experience so far it has worked really well. I am thinking it will help quite a bit with the bugs on my canoe trip in a few weeks.
Vitamin b patches work for me, keeps away horseflies, Mosquitos and black flies. And lasts at least 6 hours, my smaller friends get 8 hours out of theirs.
Nothing wrong with deet but I have been using a thermacel for the last couple years. It works great. they are a little pricey but I think they are worth it.
