Smitty and I are off to Tobin for the 25th annual Premier's Cup walleye tourny being held this Friday and Saturday at Tobin Lake. This is an awesome event and as always there will be some stiff competition. In previous years Smitty and I managed to get our "over" on day 1 and were still in the hunt for the title going into day two of the event. The previous years on day two we have failed to put an "Over in the boat and have finished 10-15 pounds out of first place . At this event that has ussually placed us in 35th-80th spot in the field and way out of the money. The first year we fished the event on day two Smitty had an epic battle with a water logged stick that we were sure was a walleye. The way the current was and with the size of the stick he was sure he felt the head shakes of a good sized walleye. The way the rod was bent I was convinced he had an over to complete the day for us as well. Once we saw the tip of the stick coming out of the water a feeling of hope went to a feeling of dissapointment pretty quick as time was running out on the day . The last time we fished this event we ended up 10 pounds out of first place. On day two after re tying my rig with about an hour left to fish , I felt a very solid thump on my leach. After giving the fish some line I set the hook and the fish proceeded to take out 10-15 yards of line very quickly and then all I felt was slack line. After I reeled the line in I discovered my snell for the rig I was running was gone,I felt like I had just lost game seven of the Stanley Cup in overtime! To this day I need to tell myself it was a big pike and not a walleye ( truthfully it felt like a walleye with a steady pull away from the boat and not the thrashy nature of a pike) . I guess thats tournament fishing all can be won or lost in an instant. I know we have a few of our members that fish the Premier's Cup every year. Uzzi and Tip Up Frenzy always do well at this tourney. Good luck to all the particapants and lets hope for some hot bites for the weekend!
